Shaun Richards is a painting and mixed media artist has lived and worked in Raleigh, North Carolina until recently when he relocated to Hamburg, Germany with his wife, Dr. Amanda Maples. He was born in Brunswick, Georgia, grew up in rural Southeast Virginia and attended UNC-Wilmington, where he earned a BA in art in 1999. Richards’ work has broadly focused on incentives, socio-economic issues, and political matters for the better part of a decade. He has described it as a focus on our complicity and responsibility for the world in which we live—particularly those institutions, and paradigms that define contemporary western society. He often combines collage/mixed media, stencils, and traditional painting methods contrasted with abstraction to impress upon the viewer these complicated issues in a way that is often ambivalent, yet layered.
