Open '22 (Set of 4 Framed Prints)

Bill Sullivan

Photography | 2022

I am a long time player — and fan — and have been working with visual elements that play with the spaces of art and tennis since 2007 when I first started photographing tennis courts on LCD screens. Since then I have worked with the court space to play with different aspects of abstraction using painting, printmaking, photography and sculpted forms. I first started using the court as a central element in the artist book format in 2013 with the book Forest Hills, and have since made the court oriented books The Glass Court and Courts & Covers. This year marks the release of The 2-book set COURT 1520-2020 : an investigation of court spaces over the last 500 years, that includes works by long time player and artist Charles Johnstone. The book functions as a lyrical journal, with images and text, traveling through the histories of the games of lawn tennis, court tennis, racquets, trinquet and squash over the past five hundred years.

In connection with COURT 1520-2020, which will have its U.S. release at this year’s Printed Matter Art Book Fair in October, I’m excited to present Open ‘22 a set of 4 prints in an edition of 25 inspired by this year’s U.S. Open.

For nearly two decades Bill Sullivan’s work has been part of a diverse program of artistic production ranging from photographic media, print making, painting, design, installation and book making. He is known for his tennis court related works, as well as his re-interpretations of image archives of various genres. Much of his work has centered on the creation of unique photo and digital based image surfaces. Sullivan has worked closely with the publisher S U N to produce a series of image-based books structured as something between graphic novels and catalogs. These books include the internationally acclaimed Forest Hills (2014) a book that follows the 20th century history of tennis and art confusing and conflating their stories to create a new kind of visual history. Sullivan has produced at least a book each year since 2014 including The Black Panther Coloring Book {with Corey Presha} (2014), Reckless Spring (2015), Letters of People (2016), Permanent Fun (2017), Pure Country (2018), Self Portraits with Mirrors (2019), and Major Force Vol 1: 2007-2011(2020). Sullivan was awarded a 2021 Guggenheim Fellowship for photography. His work has been exhibited internationally and is part of major collections including The ICP, The Met, and MOMA. He currently lives and works in New York City.
